Not only for getting a license, but also for living in a state where licenses aren’t given out as easily as bed bath and beyond coupons.

Everyday is bad hair day for TAE!

But as the nice people at the DMV told me, licenses here aren’t meant to regulate whether drivers are capable or not of driving but instead as a device to identify the driver of a car and to sanction said drivers. Meaning that this isn’t a license as much as a piece of plastic with my nationality and my tax payer ID (RFC) so that they can charge me speeding fines and what not.

The backside says it’s given on the basis of the Mexico City traffic code, it basically means legally that they assume I read and understood the whole booklet in case I break a traffic law. It’s like the Miranda Rights but without the “rights” part and just many Mirandas getting sanctioned for doing illegal u turns.

What does my license say if you scan the barcode on it?
My emergency contact, whether or not I need glasses to drive, and my bloodtype. I do need glasses to drive but I don’t wear glasses on the picture so, if I’m caught driving without my glasses I could blame it on an error by the clerks.

Sigh.

Well, at least they don’t pretend to grant licenses based on some arbitrary testing prerequisite. Per my wife, one only has to hand over a couple bills to the examiner to get a license in Peru. And she proved it, too: she burned the clutch on my car the first time she tried to drive it.

Once you turn 18 you can get a driver’s license without any prerequisite.

It’s funny because if you want a learners permit (which you get if you want to drive under 18) you do need to take a driver’s test, the government doesn’t do it (independent schools do and it’s a doodle) But learners need to drive with an adult with a valid license and between 5am and 10pm.

Meaning that it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that the learner driver was better prepared to drive than the supervising adult.

Nope, The Mexico City license just assumes you’re not a donor. Other Mexican states do list you as a donor or not a donor.

I mean, I think it should be obligatory (to be a donor) but at least here in Mexico it’s a bit odd to say the least.

Some people have told me (But I cannot verify this) that if you’re in an accident and you’re listed as a donor paramedics would turn a blind eye and let you die because they either have an organ quota or they would sell you to the black market which is fairly terrifying.

I don’t believe it, but my family does, so we did a compromise: I wouldn’t list myself as a donor or not a donor in any document, so if the worst were to come, they’d donate my organs once the doctors get their consent.

Some of them are real shady, but I think it’s mostly my family being very elitist... if it really happened they’d actually label the “no donor” on the license I guess. In the end if I die my useful parts will go to live human beings hopefully thanks to the compromise.

Why in the world would paramedics have an organ quota, and if they were selling organs illicitly, why would they care about your consent? A question for your relatives who believe the conspiracy theory I guess.

Do you know whether hospitals in other provinces/cities do organ transplants? What I’m getting at is organ donation is a moot point if you live (or, more precisely, die) too far from a transplant facility.

Calderon tried to change it from Estados Unidos Mexicanos to simply Mexico (maybe Republica Federal Mexicana like the Germans) near the end of his term but I think the motion failed.

But he did de-federalize road tax which lead to some interesting plates showing up in Mexico City.

Also, if you ever saw DC plates, they say “Taxation without representation” and it’s the same here in Mexico City, we are a Federal District, like DC, not a State. So they changed the law, made a new constitution and it’s coming into action on September of 2018, the constitution say’s we’ll be called Ciudad de Mexico and we have near state autonomy (practically the same) Biggest new thing is that Mexico City boroughs can get indebted now.

Well, if I’m listed as a donor they have less hoops to go through.

As far as I can tell, IMSS and ISSTE runs the donor registry and the board that decides who gets what when it comes to transplants, they also transport (often with help of the army or the local police) the organs to the hospitals in question.

Actually ignored everything I just said, Congress passed an amendment to the ley general de salud last month that makes every Mexican citizen a donor automatically. You can opt out but it’s a mess of documents to do it.
